In the Southern United States, the race season takes a distinct nosedive during the mid-summer months. This downtime is perfect for working on projects like the ‘ghettocet‘. But this year, I wanted to do something a little different. Namely, I want to venture out and explore the other aspects of the car culture in the town I now call home.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of options, including a hugely popular ‘car’s and coffee’ venue, a large autocross community with rallycross, and a strong circle track field. In this case, I attended the 4th annual Rocket City Octane Auto Show, Huntsville’s largest indoor auto show, held annually at the Von Braun Convention Center.
Rocket City Octane Auto Show
I have been to many car and trade shows throughout the years. Although the Rocket City Octane Auto Show was far from the biggest, it was well executed and laid-back—a combination I find uniquely Huntsville the more I venture out. A large variety of cars were represented with vendors, food, and drink. It’s a perfect way to spend a couple of hours indoors on a Saturday in August.
I arrived early to give myself the best chance at snapping photos of the cars. To my surprise, attendees were already piling in, but I could still grab more than a handful of decent pics.
(Disclaimer: I am an old-school import and racecar guy, so you won’t see many V8s in my pictures. I figure American Muscle is overrepresented at every show anyway.)
There’s More
This was a pretty cool show to walk through on a lazy Saturday. Although I don’t know much about the group, Rocket City Octane organizes several events, including cruise-ins, throughout the year. The event listings can be found on their Facebook page.
Next time, I may go see what the ‘buzz’ is about at the Huntsville Speedway.
